The Mini
The Mini broke new ground in 1959 thanks to its compactness; its engine was turned sideways with its gearbox tucked under-neath so that four seats could be squeezed into its 10ft length. Its maverick designer, Sir Alex Issigonis, was a chain smoker, so there was an ashtray. But he hated noise while he drove, so there was no room left for a radio.
